Preschool and Kindergarten visit Canberra Airport

Posted on 06 Nov 2015

AirKidets tour

Yesterday the preschool and kindergarten groups visited Canberra Airport.

The children went on a tour of the terminal. Our guide Gilbert, showed the group the baggage claim area, some safety features of the building and the Qantas and Virgin areas.

The children found out about the role of police dogs when they met 'Harlow' and her handlers. Preschool asked several questions to find out more about Harlow's role. Many children accepted the opportunity to pat Harlow.

The group went through security screening and later using their passes, boarded the bus at gate 5. We were all amazed to be able to travel along the tarmac on our way to the fire station beside the airfield. The firemen surprised us by squirting a powerful jet of water all over the bus!

It was a busy day at the airport and we had to wait for a few planes to land and take off in order to safely return to the terminal.

Our thanks to the parents and grandparents who volunteered to be part of this experience.

MEP Big Gig 2015

A celebration of music making!

Yesterday the Music Engagement Program hosted the 2015 Big Gig. Children in kindergarten, year 1 and 2 attended the event at the Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music.

The event was attended by a range of community members from across the ACT. This diverse group highlighted one of the key philosophies of the MEP: that music making is for everyone.

Children from the O'Connor Cooperative School were invited on stage to help lead 'Down where the watermelon grow'. Boys from our school joined other males on stage to lead the audience in singing 'Wonderful World'. Luka (yr 2) entertained everyone with his special appearance as the 'short fat Texan'.

We thank the MEP for inviting us to take part in this engaging event. It was an authentic way for our children to implement the musical learning that takes place at the O'Connor Cooperative School on a weekly basis.

Thank you to our parents, siblings, families and carers for attending.
