Ride your Bike day

Ride your Bike day

In 2015 our school is once again participating in the Active Kids Challenge.

This morning all of the children at the O’Connor Cooperative School participated in a ‘Ride your Bike’ day. The aim of the session was to promote physical activity through the use of bikes, scooters, skateboards and other wheeled equipment.

Working together, the staff and parents set up a fun and interesting course at Horse Park, located behind the school grounds. The children were able to find out about electric bikes, bike maintenance, road safety and bike harnesses from parents.

The children enjoyed the challenge of riding around the course with their peers.

We thank our parent community for supporting this event!

Numeracy evening

Numeracy evening

Last night the staff at the O’Connor Cooperative School hosted a maths information and games evening for parents.

The session offered information about the teaching and learning of mathematics from preschool to year 2. Staff explained how learning in this area takes place through investigations, explicit teaching as part of the Balanced Numeracy Program and how real life experiences are used to provide context and connections.

Parents spent time learning some maths games using dice, cards, hundred charts and number lines. They also met our mathematician partner, Dr Girija Chetty from the University of Canberra. Girija demonstrated how apps can be used to promote mathematical skills and thinking.

Children in kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 have been working with Girija to apply their mathematical knowledge and extend their learning. This is an ongoing partnership staff member Caroline Doverty has established as part of the Scientists and Mathematicians in Schools program.

We thank the parents who attended the session.
